What is the Meaning of Empathy:

Empathy means understanding the point of view of others and sharing their emotions by putting yourself in someone else’s place. It is considered an emotional skill to experience others’ emotional pain. It is a sign of being a kind and understanding human being.

Many individuals get confused between empathy  and sympathy. There is a contrast among empathy and sympathy. Sympathy  implies responding to the experience of others while empathy implies having the option to empathize with others’ aggravation as it’s your own. Empathetic people are generally there to help their companions, family and their friends and family genuinely through their difficult times.

It is considered by many neuroscientists that empathy is a process of experiencing the exact pain and emotion in yourself that is experienced by other people. In Psychological terms, it is known as simulation theory.

There are different theories on how we feel empathy. Some scientist believes that it is a type of neuron called a mirror neuron in our brain. It gets activated when an individual performs the same action as someone else is performing. Maybe people feel different types of empathy in different situations.

Different Types of Empathy: 

  1. Cognitive empathy: Cognitive empathy depends on the ability of other persons to understand another person’s point of view or mental state without being biased and passing judgment. It is not necessarily important to feel the same emotions.
  2. Cultural Empathy: cultural empathy includes understanding and valuing the cultural foundation, convictions, and practices of others. It permits people to explore the diversity of different cultures.
  3. Emotional Empathy: It incorporate the ability to physically feel the pain of others. For example, if your friend or your close one gets hurt you start feeling a sense of pain without getting hurt. That’s called emotional empathy.
  4. Compassionate Empathy: Compassionate empathy includes both emotional and cognitive empathy. Where you are not only understanding others’ emotional pain and feeling but also feeling that pain physically.

How to Show Empathy?

 Different factors influence somebody’s capacity to be less or more empathetic towards others. However, it’s not such a bad thing to practice more empathy in your daily schedule. Here are some tips to be empathetic.

1. Be a good listener

Being a decent listener is significant. It is a personal correspondence expertise. When somebody is discussing their thoughts with you, put forth a cognizant attempt to focus on what they are talking about. Set aside distractions like your phone or laptop, maintain eye contact, and show that you are attentively present.

2. Provide emotional and physical comfort

Studies have demonstrated that these chemicals release feelings of happiness elevate their mood and create a sense of well-being.

3. Value the other person’s experience

Validation is a strong form of empathizing. People are social animals who seek to be valued, acknowledged, and appreciated by others. These instinctual patterns exist in modern society and culture. At the point when you pay attention to and approve of somebody, that means that they are being accepted in your social circle and providing them a signal that they are seen heard, and accepted. An empathetic individual cannot only acknowledge but also embrace the feelings of others as if it’s your own.  

4. Connect with social action movement

Empathy is not about having individual interactions but taking it to a larger scale by getting involved in social action movements such as advocacy groups or charity efforts. A social action movement is a powerful way to make a meaningful action. 

5. Don’t just listen but also share

Empathy is a two-way street that involves not listening to other feelings but also sharing your feelings and thoughts. It helps to build healthy relationships.

Examples of Empathy:

  • Feeling the other person’s emotions.
  • Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes to understand their situation.
  • Feeling happy in other person’s happiness.
  • Feeling sad in other person’s sadness.
  • Giving them full attention when they share their feeling.
  • Try to understand their thoughts even if you don’t agree with them.
  • Always try to be a good listener without interrupting.
